The simplest tip is also the most effective one - dime out the background light of the display. The fluorescent lamp is one of the biggest power consumption in a notebook. For the ThinkPad T43p, the display is dimmed using the key combination [Fn] + [Brightness], Power consumption is thus reduced by a full four watts. This measure has a potential of saving up to 20% power with respect to the total power requirement as it gets difficult to read a dark screen when the sunlight is strong. You have to take the surrounding light into consideration when dimming the display.
